The project began with a thorough energy assessment. GRW’s experts analysed Sulzer’s existing electrical infrastructure, consumption patterns, and peak demand, revealing a critical gap: The current electrical supply could not handle the power demands of the proposed EV chargers. To address this, GRW proposed installing a new 400A electrical supply, which would not only meet the needs of the 11 chargers but also allow for future expansion.

With the groundwork laid, the GRW team designed an integrated charging system with the primary goal of scalability and efficiency. The solution included 11 state-of-the-art 22kW and 7.4kW chargers, capable of charging multiple vehicles simultaneously without sacrificing speed or efficiency. A sophisticated load-balancing system was incorporated to optimise power distribution across all chargers, ensuring no part of the system would become overloaded.

One of the project's standout features was the seamless integration of the charging system into Sulzer’s EV cloud. This cloud platform enabled remote monitoring, control, and data analysis of the entire EV network. Sulzer now has the ability to manage charging sessions, track energy usage, and view live data from their chargers, providing valuable insights for future planning and optimisation.

 As part of the system’s design, GRW also undertook extensive civil works to redesign the parking area, ensuring dedicated EV charging bays were marked and easy to use for Sulzer employees and visitors.

The project's scale and complexity required careful planning and coordination. To ensure minimal disruption to Sulzer’s ongoing operations, GRW developed a phased implementation strategy. The first step was to dig trenches and lay cables for the new 400A supply in close coordination with local utility providers. Following that, the electrical supply was installed and rigorously tested, ensuring it was reliable and safe for the upcoming load.

 Once the infrastructure was in place, GRW began installing the 11 chargers, integrating them into Sulzer’s cloud network. This was followed by marking the newly designated EV parking bays, ensuring everything was ready for use without delay

Throughout the process, GRW maintained close communication with Sulzer’s team, providing updates and ensuring any concerns were swiftly addressed. This collaborative approach ensured the project proceeded smoothly, with minimal disruption to Sulzer’s day-to-day operations.

Operating every hour of every day, ITPL is a powerhouse in the beverage supply chain, but this constant activity comes at a cost: immense energy consumption. In line with Coca-Cola’s sustainability commitment, ITPL pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2027. It was an ambitious promise, one that required a transformative leap in how they sourced and managed energy.

Central to this transformation was renewable energy. Solar power offered the perfect solution—reliable, scalable, and well-suited to ITPL’s extensive rooftop space. Yet, transitioning a 24/7 operation to clean energy was no small task. They needed a partner who could deliver a complex, robust system tailored to their unique requirements. GRW Solar, an MCS-accredited leader in renewable solutions, stood out among the competition, winning the £1.124 million project with a plan that was as innovative as practical.

Turning a Solar PV and Battery Storage Vision into Reality

ITPL’s goal was clear: integrate renewable energy into its operations to dramatically cut emissions and reduce dependency on the grid. GRW’s solution was comprehensive, combining a 737kW solar array with a 477kW battery storage system.

The solar array was designed to capture energy efficiently throughout the year, generating enough power to meet ITPL’s operational demands while reducing reliance on external energy sources. To ensure this power could be stored and utilized around the clock, GRW introduced a cutting-edge Initilion battery system. This storage solution provided a critical buffer, capturing surplus energy during peak sunlight hours and making it available during nighttime operations or periods of high demand.

At the heart of the system were Solis inverters, chosen for their reliability and efficiency in converting solar-generated electricity into usable power for ITPL’s operations. GRW’s engineers also designed the system to integrate seamlessly with ITPL’s grid connection, paving the way for potential energy export. This future-forward move could turn surplus solar power into a revenue stream.

Navigating Commerical Solar Pv Challenges 

The project wasn’t without its challenges. ITPL’s continuous operations meant there was no downtime to accommodate disruptions. GRW overcame this by implementing a phased installation plan and coordinating closely with ITPL’s teams to minimize interruptions. Each phase was meticulously timed, allowing ITPL to maintain its workflow without compromise.

Another hurdle was securing approval for grid connection. GRW worked closely with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO), undertaking significant electrical and mechanical upgrades to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

The team also prioritised system longevity. GRW integrated thoughtful design elements such as sacrificial netting for easy cleaning and perimeter edge protection for maintenance safety, ensuring the system could be serviced efficiently for decades.

Safety was paramount throughout the project. GRW implemented stringent measures to protect workers and ensure long-term system reliability. Comprehensive risk assessments and safety drills preceded the installation, while edge protection and netting safeguarded workers during and after the build.

These measures didn’t just protect people—they protected ITPL’s investment, ensuring the solar array and battery storage system would perform optimally and safely for years.

When the system went live, the results were immediate and transformative. The 737kW solar array generates approximately 700,000 kWh annually, significantly reducing ITPL’s reliance on grid electricity. The 477kW Initilion battery system ensures that this clean energy is available around the clock, even during peak operational hours or overnight.

Known for its farm shop, café, and seasonal events, Farmer Copley’s embodies the farm-to-table ethos, offering visitors an authentic taste of local produce and countryside charm.

As the farm has grown, so has its ambition. Every addition to its portfolio reflects a thoughtful commitment to innovation and enhancing the visitor experience. The most recent addition, an ice cream parlour, is a testament to this ethos. Designed to offer a fresh and indulgent treat to its many visitors, the parlour was a new and exciting venture for the farm.
