Sulzer: A Leader in Fluid Engineering and Innovation

Sulzer, a global leader in fluid engineering and chemical processing, has long been committed to pioneering innovations that support modern infrastructure. With operations worldwide, their Leeds facility is a key hub, known for delivering cutting-edge solutions to industries ranging from oil and gas to water management. Yet, Sulzer’s true vision extends beyond technical prowess: Sustainability is at the core of their operations, with a strong commitment to reducing their environmental impact.

As part of this mission, Sulzer began integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into their fleet to further their environmental responsibility. However, transitioning to electric vehicles required more than simply adopting the vehicles themselves—it required the installation of a robust and scalable charging infrastructure to support the growing fleet. That’s when Sulzer partnered with GRW EV Charging, a trusted leader in tailored EV solutions. GRW’s involvement marked a critical partnership and an opportunity to help Sulzer take another bold step toward meeting its sustainability targets.

The vision was clear: Sulzer’s Leeds site needed a solution that could integrate seamlessly with their operations while supporting future growth as their fleet of electric vehicles continued to expand. They required a system that was efficient, reliable, and scalable. GRW, with its expertise in delivering high-capacity EV solutions, was the perfect partner to bring this vision to life.

The Vision: Building A Future-Proof EV Charging Network

The project began with a thorough energy assessment. GRW’s experts analysed Sulzer’s existing electrical infrastructure, consumption patterns, and peak demand, revealing a critical gap: The current electrical supply could not handle the power demands of the proposed EV chargers. To address this, GRW proposed installing a new 400A electrical supply, which would not only meet the needs of the 11 chargers but also allow for future expansion.

With the groundwork laid, the GRW team designed an integrated charging system with the primary goal of scalability and efficiency. The solution included 11 state-of-the-art 22kW and 7.4kW chargers, capable of charging multiple vehicles simultaneously without sacrificing speed or efficiency. A sophisticated load-balancing system was incorporated to optimise power distribution across all chargers, ensuring no part of the system would become overloaded.

One of the project's standout features was the seamless integration of the charging system into Sulzer’s EV cloud. This cloud platform enabled remote monitoring, control, and data analysis of the entire EV network. Sulzer now has the ability to manage charging sessions, track energy usage, and view live data from their chargers, providing valuable insights for future planning and optimisation.

As part of the system’s design, GRW also undertook extensive civil works to redesign the parking area, ensuring dedicated EV charging bays were marked and easy to use for Sulzer employees and visitors.

The Journey: From Vision To EV Charging Reality

The project's scale and complexity required careful planning and coordination. To ensure minimal disruption to Sulzer’s ongoing operations, GRW developed a phased implementation strategy. The first step was to dig trenches and lay cables for the new 400A supply in close coordination with local utility providers. Following that, the electrical supply was installed and rigorously tested, ensuring it was reliable and safe for the upcoming load.

Once the infrastructure was in place, GRW began installing the 11 chargers, integrating them into Sulzer’s cloud network. This was followed by marking the newly designated EV parking bays, ensuring everything was ready for use without delay

Throughout the process, GRW maintained close communication with Sulzer’s team, providing updates and ensuring any concerns were swiftly addressed. This collaborative approach ensured the project proceeded smoothly, with minimal disruption to Sulzer’s day-to-day operations.

The Result: A Future-Proof Solution

The completion of the EV charging infrastructure exceeded Sulzer’s expectations. The new system was not only highly functional and energy-efficient but also user-friendly. The cloud integration gave Sulzer full control over the network, providing real-time monitoring and valuable data on charging patterns, energy consumption, and efficiency.

The load balancing system ensured that all 11 chargers operated efficiently even during peak demand, while the redesigned parking bays and clear signage enhanced the user experience. The successful installation of the new infrastructure provided Sulzer with a scalable, sustainable solution capable of supporting their growing fleet of electric vehicles well into the future.

Looking Ahead: A Strong Partnership for Sustainability

For GRW, partnering with Sulzer on this project was not just about delivering an EV charging solution; it was about aligning with a company whose values are rooted in sustainability and innovation. This collaboration represents the power of partnerships that drive change and create real, measurable impact.

As Sulzer’s fleet continues to grow, GRW is committed to supporting their journey with future-proof EV solutions and continued service excellence. The work with Sulzer showcases the ability to provide high-capacity infrastructure that supports both immediate needs and future growth, and it serves as a model for other businesses looking to embrace sustainable solutions.

Sulzer’s success is also a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration. GRW is proud to have been part of this forward-thinking initiative, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Sulzer as they take bold steps toward a greener future.
